The sculpture titled "Norbert" is a 70 cm dragon bust that explores the intersection of traditional ceramic craftsmanship and modern additive manufacturing. Developed in 2019 during a beginners sculpture class, the project focuses on the challenges of large-scale clay modeling, specifically regarding structural integrity, organic texturing, and the integration of digital components.
Process & Sculpting
The fabrication process began with a custom wire and foil armature that was covered in plastic bags designed to support the substantial weight of the clay while maintaining the intended posture. To ensure a successful kiln firing, the sculpting process required moisture management and thickness control to prevent structural failure during the drying stages. Traditional hand-sculpting techniques were utilised to refine the facial structure and intricate scale textures, while modern technology was integrated through the use of Sculptris for digital modeling. The final form features 3D-printed horns that were precision-fitted to the ceramic head, demonstrating a successful hybrid workflow between manual and digital fabrication.
Finishing Touches
After the clay was fired, the finishing process was started to enhance the sculptural depth. Rather than using conventional ceramic glazes, layers of oil paints and specialised glazes were applied to create a nuanced, weathered patina. This multi-layered technique emphasises the complexity of the surface morphology, resulting in a lifelike appearance that draws attention to the intricate details of the skin and scales.
